Chatham a Possible Location for Train Station Parking Garage

An improvement study will be presented in June, according to an article in New Jersey Hills.

The Chatham NJ Transit Station is one of three stations being considered as a site for a 500-car parking garage, according to an article on New Jersey Hills.

The garage, if it is built, would be located at either Convent Station, Madison station or Chatham and could be operational by the year 2020.

The North Jersey Transit Planning Authority hired the consulting firm VHB to do an improvement study along the Route 124 corridor. A final report will be given to NJ Transit in June.

Parking at the Chatham train station is a contentious issue among residents. The existing parking lot is owned by Chatham Borough and used as a source of revenue. Borough residents can purchase parking permits for the station's north and south lots, with excess lots available for township residents and residents of other towns to purchase daily permits for.

Parking at the station is strictly enforced and is often full during commuting hours.
