Administrator Borough's Highest-Paid Employee

Through shared services, modest raises, borough reduces cost of municipal salaries.

 will see a reduction of $214,664 in salaries this year for full-time employees.

The reduction is due mainly to shared services utilized by the borough that went into effect in 2011 and were reflected in the permanent 2011 budget. The budget was  with a tax levy increase of 3.3 percent, and an overall budget increase of 3.66 percent.

The Chatham Borough Council also approved new labor contracts for the  and  departments on Jan. 3. The contracts will , and the savings will be reflected in the 2012 budget, according to Borough Administrator Robert Falzarano.

A complete list of salaries for Police and Public Works employees are set by contract. The details of the new contracts were not immediately available.

Some of the shared services that enabled the savings were the , and using the Morris County Communications Center for .

Most borough employees saw salary increases from their 2011 salaries of a few hundred dollars. Only a few salary increases from 2011 are more than $1,000:

  • Administrator Robert Falzarano, with a raise of $1,640
  • Police Chief Philip J. Crosson, with a raise of $1,326
  • Borough Engineer and Zoning Officer Vincent J. DeNave, with a raise of $1,400
  • Public Works Director Robert Venezia, with a raise of $1,119.

Chatham Borough is liable for $371,268 in accumulated sick and vacation time to municipal employees. For the average borough residence worth $658,041, the estimated impact on each household is $118.34.

In December, 234 mayors  for Gov. Chris Christie's plan to eliminate vacation and sick time payouts for retiring public employees. Liabilities for unused sick and vacation day benefits total more than $825 million statewide, Christie said.
