Borough Begins Resurfacing Ahead of Schedule

Borough engineer said the program will begin sooner than expected.

Five borough streets will soon become a little easier to drive on.

Chatham Borough Engineer Vincent J. DeNave said the 2011 Road Resurfacing program will begin Monday, ahead of schedule.

"Due to cancellations, there was an opening that would allow this work to be performed earlier than anticipated," DeNave wrote in a letter to residents sent on Friday.

Tilcon, Inc. will remove 2 inches of existing pavement from five streets in Chatham Borough beginning Monday. DeNave said the streets will remain rough for "a couple of days" before 2 new inches of pavement are installed.

The five streets that are part of the project are:

  • Lower Elmwood Avenue
  • North Hillside Avenue
  • Woods Lane
  • Chatham Street and
  • Hedges Avenue.

Besides rough roads, DeNave said there will be a steep dip at the end of each driveway until the paving is completed. He said residents should take care maneuvering cars in and out of driveways.

Traffic Safety Officer Robert Sweetin of the Chatham Borough Police Department said police will be on the roads along with contractors at all times.

DeNave expects all work to be completed by the end of the week.
