Borough Assigns Alternate Polling Places for Special Election

Schools are unavailable for polling places over the summer.

Almost all Chatham Borough voters will cast ballots at a new location in the Aug. 13 primary.

Chatham Borough Clerk Susan Caljean said schools are unavailable for use as polling places this summer, meaning the voters in Districts 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 will have to vote at a different location than they usually do.

Districts 1, 2 and 3 will vote at the Chatham Borough Firehouse at Firehouse Plaza and South Passaic Avenue. Usually only District 2 residents vote at the firehouse; Districts 1 and 3 usually vote at Milton Avenue School.

Districts 4, 6, 8 and 9 will vote at the Chatham United Methodist Church on Main Street, where usually only Districts 4 and 9 vote. District 6 and 8 residents usually vote at the ECLC School.

Districts 5 and 7 residents will vote at the lobby of Chatham Middle School on Main Street. Usually those residents vote at Washington Avenue School.

The election is the special primary for the U.S. Senate seat which was vacated when Sen. Frank Lautenberg died June 3.

The primary will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 13. The regular election will take place Wednesday, Oct. 16.

"Approximately 4,132 voters will be involved," Caljean said. Anyone who will be 18 or older by August 13 can register to vote. Registration forms are available at the Chatham Borough Clerk's Office or at the Morris County Clerk's Office.
