Ali Nonnenmacher Hopes to Get to Work

The candidate for the Chatham Township Committee has big plans.

Chatham Township Committee candidate Laura Ali Nonnenmacher spoke with Chatham Patch after she voted early Tuesday afternoon in the June primary.

"Idon't know how it's going to end up, so I'm not being presumptuous," she said. "But I feel good, and I feel very grateful for the amount of support that I've gotten from just about everybody I've talked to."

Nonnenmacher is one of four Republicans running for two available seats on the Township Committee. With no Democrats running, the two candidates with the most votes Tuesday will move forward to an uncontested general election.

Nonnenmacher ran on a platform of wanting to engage the small businesses in Chatham Township, especially in the Hickory Square shopping area. If she wins, she said, she does not plan to wait until her term begins in January before getting involved.

"I'm going to start reaching out to the community as soon as I could," she said. "I think my idea about bringing Hickory Square back to life  is something that really resonated with people."

As a small business owner who helps with marketing and fostering other small businesses, enlivening the township's business community is something Nonnenmacher gets passionate about. "I'm ready to give a lot of my free time … to help those businesses grow and get it back to be a bustling area," she said. "I want to get started on that right away."

Nonnenmacher said reports of low voter turnout early Tuesday was a concern to her. Still, she said, she is "hopeful" that the more people will go out to vote as the afternoon and evening go on.

Her plans for Tuesday evening, she said, are to have dinner with her family and wait for the results to come in at home.

Win or lose, she said, running for committee has been "a great experience."
