$275K Minimum Bid for Borough-Owned Lot

57 Watchung Ave. in Chatham for sale to highest bidder.

A wooded, 0.2-acre lot on Watchung Avenue in Chatham is for sale to the highest bidder, with the minimum bid set at $275,000.

The property is owned by the borough. Officials determined it no longer is needed for public use.

Bids will be accepted by the borough clerk 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6., in Council Chambers at Borough Hall, 54 Fairmount Ave., according to a notice about the sale on the borough website (PDF).

The property comes with a bulk variance to permit a front yard setback of 19 feet along Girard Avenue where 30 feet is required.

A neighboring property owner on Girard Avenue requested the lot be sold with a deed restriction on construction, as the borough did with a lot on Chatham Street. The neighbor said building a home there would hurt property values. Officials said they did not believe it would hurt property values, and selling the land to a developer is in the best interest of Chatham taxpayers.
