'We've Got it Covered' Comes to Madison Community House

The Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park will present the concert on Thursday, June 5.

The Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park, in conjunction with The Coffeehouse Project NJ will present "We've Got It Covered," a concert of well-known and well-loved folk and rock tunes, at the Madison Community House on June 5.

John Ruán Fitzpatrick, director of TCPNJ, has been teaching at The Adult School since last spring with the goal of offering adults the opportunity to get together and make music.

"Music is a means to achieve wellness, just like exercise and meditation," FitzPatrick said. "Ability levels will always vary but by playing together we can experience enthusiasm and fulfillment."

Joseph Locascio of Florham Park, a bass player who is enrolled for his third semester of Rock Band for Adults, was grateful for finding the class.

"I started playing bass guitar in junior high, and continued through high school.  Then life happened," he said.

Locascio explained that he’d lost confidence in his ability to play, but always had it in the back of his mind that he’d pick it up again. He decided to enroll in the class and is “having fun again.”

New class member, Carrie Calnan, of Bedminster, said the class, a gift from her sister, "was the best gift ever."

"It’s a wonderful combination of great music, great people and great talent," she said. "I couldn’t be happier.”

Fitzpatrick initially offered only the rock music class, but this semester he added a folk music session.

"I realized not everyone wants to play U2 or the Eagles and there are a lot of acoustic guitarists looking for an outlet," he said.  He embraces inclusiveness and encourages commitment to shared outcomes in both classes. And this semester, he decided to take his goal of commitment to shared outcomes to a new level. Fitzpatrick decided to find a venue for an appropriate concert to celebrate the end of the semester. The rock group will headline the evening under the name Days of Future Past. The folk group, Junior and the Surveyors, are the support act.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 5. Admission is free. For more information, visit asinfo@the adultschool.org or call 973-443-9222.
