Wednesday Accident Results in Ticket, Hospital Visits

Borough teen charged with careless driving.

A 19-year old borough resident was charged with careless driving by township police in connection with a Wednesday car accident on Shunpike Road.

Police said Karlem Siviragimenez, 19, of Chatham Borough, crossed into the intersection of Noe Avenue and Shunpike Road during a red light at about 5:25pm as he was attempting to travel on Noe northeast toward Madison.

They said Siviragimenez's Nissan hit a BMW driven by Walter Long Jr., 40, of Helena, Mont. Long, according to police, was traveling west on Shunpike Road.

Police said Siviragimenez's Nissan went off the road and into nearby St. Vincent's Cemetery, where it came to rest against a headstone.

Siviragimenez was issued a summons for careless driving.

Police said both drivers were transported to Overlook Hospital in Summit by the Chatham Emergency Squad to be evaluated and both vehicles were towed from the scene. A 20-year old passenger in Siviragimenez's vehicle refused medical attention, according to police.
