Twp. Prepares for National Night out Tuesday

Emergency responders will attend block parties to teach residents about the importance of safety.

National Night Out, now in its 29th year returns to Chatham Township Tuesday.

Chatham Township residents hosted six separate block parties in 2011 and seven in 2010, attended by the , , and .

Locations this year include:

  • The township gazebo at Wickham Woods
  • 1 Lake Rd.
  • 39 Johnson Dr.
  • on River Road

All block parties will be visited by members of the Chatham Township Police Department, elected officials from Chatham Township, and McGruff the Crime Dog.

National Night Out began as an effort by the National Association of Town Watch to educate residents on how to prevent crimes and drug use in their neighborhoods and to strengthen relationships between local police and residents.

In 2011, citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide celebrated National Night Out.

Summit, Madison and East Hanover were among the nearby communities which participated in last year's night out against crime.
