Police: Township Teen Causes Accident at Fairmount & Southern

Driver was treated at the scene by the Chatham Emergency Squad.

Chatham Township Police arrested Mia Flannery, 18, of Chatham Township, for allegedly driving while intoxiced after she was involved in a motor vehicle accident Tuesday, according to a statement released Friday.

While on patrol, Patrolman David Schaffer came across a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and Southern Boulevard on Tuesday, police said.

Two vehicles were involved in the accident and had sustained heavy front end damage and fluid spills, police said.

During the course his investigation, Schaffer detected the odor of alcohol on Flannery's breath, police said. Flannery was one of the drivers involved in the accident.

After further investigation, Flannery was taken into custody for driving after having consumed alcohol underage, police said. Subsequent tests at police headquarters confirmed that Flannery was driving while intoxicated, according to police.

Flannery was processed and later released to a family member after being charged with failure to yield the right of way and driving while intoxicated, police said. She has been scheduled with a preliminary court date of June 14, according to police.

The Chatham Emergency Squad and Chatham Township Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene of the accident, according to police.

Flannery was the only person at the scene who reported an injury and was treated by the Emergency Squad, police said. The occupants of the other car, a mother and two young children, did not report any injuries, police said.
