Township Man Arrested on Assault Charge

arrested Matthew Dudley, 22, of Chatham Township on Monday, April 16 on charges of assault and burglary.

Chatham Township police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at a Meyersville Road, Chatham residence at 1:19 p.m. on April 16, according to a statement released by police Wednesday.

The door to the residence was kicked in and unlawful entry was made by a man described as the resident's boyfriend, police said.

When officers arrived, they learned that the suspect had fled into the woods, according to police.

After a search by the Morris County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit and subsequent investigation by responding officers, an arrest warrant was issued for Dudley, police said.

At 8:30 p.m., Dudley was taken into custody by members of the , according to police. Chatham police said Dudley walked to Westfield, where his mother resides, though he was not taken into custody at her residence.

Dudley was transported to , where he was processed and later remanded to the Morris County Jail in default of $5,000 bail, police said.

Dudley was charged with burglary, assault and criminal mischief, according to police.

A preliminary court date has been set for April 26, police said.

Dudley was previously arrested by Madison Borough Police on Dec. 30, 2011 on the issued by Madison Municipal Court for failure to appear. Lt. Darren Danichsen of the Madison Police Department said Dudley was originally charged with defiant trespassing in 2008.
