Suspicious Fundraiser Page for Missing Long Hill Man Taken Down

Police warned David Bird's family had not authorized the fundraiser.

A fundraising page for a missing Long Hill man believed to be a scam was taken down Friday afternoon.

Long Hill Police on Thursday issued a warning that the Indiegogo site, "Help Find David Bird" was not authorized by the missing man's family. The site began a fundraiser Wednesday that was scheduled to end on April 4 with a goal of $40,000.

One donation of $1 was made anonymously with the message: “This is a scam: don't contribute!”

"In speaking with the Bird family, this is an unauthorized solicitation and the creator of this link has been messaged to remove it immediately," Long Hill Police wrote on the department Facebook page Thursday.

Bird, 55, a Wall Street Journal reporter, went for a walk at about 4 p.m. Jan. 11 and hasn't returned.

Search teams, family and community members have scoured the area, but have been unsuccessful in finding Bird.
