Second Arrest Made at Fairmount Country Club in a Week

Robert C. Smallwood was arrested on four active warrants.

Township police arrested a second man at Fairmount Country Club in a week after they found he had four active traffic warrants.

Police arrested Robert C. Smallwood, 38, of Summit, on Friday on four active warrants from Newark, Orange, East Orange and Bloomfield that totaled $1,500. He was working at the club when he was arrested.

Police Lt. George Petersen said Smallwood's arrest was not connected to an arrest of another club employee July 18.

That employee—Derrick J. Zlu, of East Orange—was working as a caddy when he made threats against another worker, according to police. When police arrived at the scene, they said, he lied about his identity before police discovered who he was and discovered there were multiple warrants for his arrest, including a no-bail warrant from the state parole department.

Petersen did say, however, that Zlu's arrest may have triggered the second apprehension.

"Because of the first arrest, maybe (people at the club) were talking, and somebody had heard through the grapevine over there that an employee over there had some warrants, and they called us and said, 'This is what I'd heard,'" Petersen said. "And so we investigated it a little bit and we found out it was true."

Police said they took Smallwood to police department headquarters. He was released after posting bail.
