UPDATE: Schools to Close All Week

Chatham Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan said schools will remain closed through Friday due to damage from the weekend snowstorm.

"We just got off the phone with Dennis Fyffe," Vaughan said. "Schools will close all week."

The following message appeared on the website shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday:

"We have been informed that we are unlikely to have power in all district schools before some time on Friday. Also, walking conditions remain hazardous. Upon the recommendation of local officials and police, all schools andoffices will be closed for the rest of the week."

The message went on to say all extracurriculars and athletics are also postponed, unless coaches directly communicate otherwise.

and are still without power, and wires are still hanging down along Milton Avenue and Elmwood Avenue on near . The district offices on Meyersville Road in Chatham Township are also still without power.

Jersey Central Power & Light's website shows 2,899 Chatham customers still without power as of 3:21 p.m. Tuesday.

The numbers are down from 3,108 Monday night at 10:29 p.m. and 3,011 at 9:20 p.m. In Green Village, which includes portions of Madison, Harding and Chatham Township, 31 residents are also without power, an increase from 6 residents at 10:29 p.m. and 5 at 9:20 p.m. Monday.

Power was restored to over 3,000 Chatham customers between and 6,322 at 5 p.m. Monday.

Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said she had pressured JCP&L to respond swiftly to the hardest-hit neighborhoods in Chatham, including Green Village. Power was also restored along portions of Southern Boulevard, between headquarters and the Wickham Woods. River Road from Chatham Glen to the also got their power back.

Hagner and Chatham Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan said the utility company estimates between 90 and 95 percent of Chatham homes will have their power restored by Thursday, and 100 percent restored by Friday. JCP&L crews are in town at work, Hagner and Vaughan said.

The Chatham Township Fire Department released a Nixle alert Tuesday urging residents to replace batteries in their carbon monoxide and smoke detector alarms.

Meyersville Road in Chatham Township continues to be without power, according to residents, as do Lisa Road and the Rolling Hills section of the township. The is closed due to lack of power. Anyone needing assistance can call (973) 635-4600.

The is open Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has access to internet, heat and power sources. The building at 45 Spring St. is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for residents to warm up and charge their electronic devices. Anyone going to the Emergency Squad building is asked to park in the Colony Pool & Tennis Club parking lot.

The Chatham Borough Police released an updated list of priorities for cleanup and safety. The list shows that the low hanging power lines and branches on Chatham Street at Lafayette Avenue have been cleared, as have the power lines on Edgewood Road, the wire and tree limbs at 55 Fairmount Ave. and the power lines and branches at Rowan Road,

The list still includes the following roads:

• Amherst Road: hanging second power lines
• Center Avenue: very low-hanging power and branches, a power line across the roadway
• Coleman Avenue: very low hanging power lines, branches down, power line down in the road
• Dellwood Avenue: power and cable lines in the roadway
• Elmwood Avenue: very low hanging power lines and branches down
• Fairfax Terrace at Edgewood Road: Low hanging power lines
• Fairmount Avenue: Low hanging power and communication lines
• Highland Avenue: tree, large branches and power lines down and in the roadway
• Hillside Avenue: power lines and tree hanging, partially and fully blocking the road at different spots (labeled very series and a high priority)
• Inwood Road: secondary power line across the road
• Jackson Avenue: tree across the roadway with power lines down and hanging low
• Lincoln Avenue: low branch in roadway, and road closed by fallen tree and power lines down in spots
• North Passaic Avenue: power lines and tree branches in roadway.
