Police had released an earlier alert regarding a "40ish white female with brown hair" driving a gold-colored Subaru wagon

According to Township Patrolman Michael Sawyer, two 15-year-old girls had left and were walking on Fairview Avenue toward Fairmount Avenue. At approximately 2:45 p.m., as they were walking down Fairview between Dellwood and Lafayette avenues, a gold-colored Subaru wagon pulled alongside them.

The female driver of the car tried to get the girls to look at something inside the car, Sawyer said. The girls refused, and the woman asked again. When the girls said no again, the woman drove away toward Fairmount Avenue, Sawyer said.

The woman did not exit her car during the exchange or try to convince the girls to get inside the car. Sawyer said it appeared the incident took place quickly, in a span of less than 60 seconds.

Sawyer said that the girls did not take down any registration information, but the license plates appeared to have a yellow or white background. Sawyer said it is possible that the car had newer state plates, which are yellow with black letters. The girls also did not notice any bumper stickers or other identifying features on the car.

The two girls were borough residents. One of them told a parent about the incident, and the parent notified the police. Borough police spoke with the girl and notified township police at approximately 3:45 p.m., about an hour after the incident. The police then spoke with the second girl involved in the incident.

The police have notified Chatham Superintendent Jim O'Neill and Chatham High Principal Darren Groh about the incident.

Police had canvassed the area following the incident, but did not immediately find a car matching the description.
