Police: Parent Was Drunk When He Tried to Pick Up Child at Middle School

Chatham Township resident charged with DWI, reckless driving and failure to stop.

A Chatham Township dad was drunk when he tried to pick up his child Tuesday afternoon from the middle school, borough police said.

Paul Mayes, 54, was charged with DWI, reckless driving and failure to stop.

According to police, officers responded to Chatham Middle School at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when the principal reported a parent was trying to pick up his child and appeared to be intoxicated.

An officer spotted the parent driving out of the parking lot and then turned right onto Main Street. The parent made a left on Division Avenue and then failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Division Avenue and Kings Road, police said Thursday.

Mayes was stopped on Woodland Avenue, exhibited signs of intoxication and performed some field sobriety tests, police said. There was no one else in the car with Mayes at the time of the stop, police said.

Mayes was arrested, transported to police headquarters, processed and released to a friend.
