Police Searching for Mercedes Thief After Road Chase

The vehicle sped away when police tried to stop it for a motor vehicle violation.

Police chased a stolen Mercedes Benz through the streets of Chatham Township early Thursday morning.

Patrolman Wayne Shivers used his lights to try to stop the 2007 Mercedes for a motor vehicle violation at about 4 a.m. Thursday when the driver gave chase at what Lt. Maureen Kazaba called "a high rate of speed."

When police ran the car's license plate they learned the vehicle was registered to a resident of Driftway Street in Chatham Township.

Police contacted the resident, who told police the vehicle had been stolen. Kazaba said the keys were left inside the vehicle overnight and the car was unlocked.

The Chatham Township Detective Bureau seeks information and asks anyone with something to offer to call 973-377-0121.
