National Night Out Returns to Chatham

The annual night of safety is meant to enhance crime prevention.

On Aug. 2, Chatham Township will participate in the 28th Annual National Night Out.

National Night Out began as an effort to educate residents on how to prevent crimes and drug use in their neighborhoods and to strengthen relationships between local police and residents.

On National Night Out, the Chatham Township Police encourage residents to "show your community spirit" by organizing a block party in your neighborhood. Any residents interested in organizing a block party are encouraged to contact Sgt. Maureen Kazaba of the Chatham Township Police Department for more information.

All block parties will be visited by members of the Chatham Township Police Department, elected officials from Chatham Township, and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Seven Chatham block parties were held for National Night Out in 2010. Summit, Madison and East Hanover were among the over 15,000 other communities within the US, US territories and Canada that participated in last year's night out against crime.
