Man Who Drove Into Pole Arrested for DWI

The accident happened at the corner of Red Road and Fuller Avenue

A man who hit a utility pole at the intersection of Red Road and Fuller Avenue was arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to borough police.

Michael Kraft, 37, of White Plains, N.Y., was injured and sitting next to his 2007 Mercedes Benz when police arrived at the scene Friday at 8 p.m. The car had split the pole at the intersection, according to police.

Police said he showed signs of intoxication but was unable to perform field sobriety tests. They said Kraft told them he had looked down and lost control of his car in the process.

Police arrested Kraft and charged him with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, and the Chatham Emergency Squad took him to Morristown Memorial Hospital, where he had blood drawn. State police will test the blood to determine how intoxicated Kraft was, according to borough police.

Jersey Central Power and Light has replaced the utility pole. The borough fire department also assisted at the scene.
