Toms River Township Polive Officer Steven Schwartz was conducting an investigation into a suspected driving under the influence driver on Route 37 westbound, just east of Vaughn Avenue on Saturday evening, when he witnessed a pickup truck strike a motorcycle and three other cars just after 10 p.m.

Investigation found that Carl Heer, 51, was operating a 1995 Ford westbound when he struck a 1980 Yamaha motorcycle pushing it 300 feet before smashing into two other cars stopped at the traffic signal.

Heer was charged with DWI

The operator of the motor cycle, Nicholas Gerofsky, 19, of Browns Mills and his passenger Brooke Hiis, 24, of Bayville were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center Trauma Center, Neptune, by the Silverton First Aid Squad.

Jamie Cunningham, 17, of Toms River whose 2002 Pontiac was struck and Jennifer Mergogey, 25, of Manchester whose 2012 Kia was struck were not injured.

Assisting in the investigation were Officer Jason Putkowski, Traffic Safety Officer Brian Doyle and Sergeant Michael Miller.
