FBI: Burglaries Up, Violent Crime Down in Chathams

Car thefts, murders, nonnegligent manslaughter and aggravated assault all down in the Chathams.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released its Uniform Crime Reports for crimes in the United States Monday, and statistics for Chatham Borough and Chatham Township showed improvement in most areas.

Violent crime fell to no reported incidents in 2010 in both the Chathams, compared to 2009. There were also no reports of aggravated assaults, after both towns reported incidents in 2009.

In Chatham Borough, property crime rose by from 61 incidents to 72. Burglary and larceny-theft are also on the rise, while car thefts fell from six cases in 2009 to only one in 2010.

Reported burglaries more than doubled in Chatham Township from 7 cases to 15 between 2009 and 2010. All other areas of crime fell, if marginally: Property crime went from 51 reported cases to 46 and larceny-thefts went from 44 to 31 incidents.
