Missing Long Hill Man's Credit Card Used in Mexico, Report Says

Missing Long Hill man David Bird's credit card was used in Mexico and his family believes his disappearance may be related to his work as a journalist, according to a news report.

NBC, citing a source close to Bird's family, reported Thursday the 55-year-old man's credit card was used in Mexico Wednesday night, and his family believes his reporting on OPEC might somehow be related to his disappearance.

Bird is a reporter for the Wall Street Journal covering energy issues.

A family friend told the New York Post NBC's report was speculation.

Meanwhile, authorities said they still are investigating his disappearance, and said investigators have not confirmed the news report about his credit card.

Long Hill police said Thursday marks the sixth day of the investigation, with some crews still searching wetlands and river areas.

"While search operations may appear to be scaling down we can assure you that the investigative aspects are scaling up," the police department said in a Facebook post. "Morris County Prosecutor’s Office detectives are with Long Hill Police investigators leading the investigation. We ask that everyone please continue to share Mr. Bird’s missing person flyer daily to keep his image in the forefront of everyone mind. Several good leads have come in that investigators are working on so please bring any and all information you feel may be important to our attention. Bird was reported missing after he went for a walk Saturday and never returned.

Long Hill police directed media questions to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office on Thursday. First Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Zelante said authorities have not confirmed Bird's credit card was used in Mexico, and authorities are investigating.
