Cyclist Struck by Car, Sent to Hospital

Chatham Township Police said the cyclists were riding next to each other when a car passed and struck one of the riders.

A bicyclist from Livingston was transported to Morristown Medical Center after he was struck by a car along Southern Boulevard Sunday.

Chatham Township Police said three bicyclists, all from Livingston, were riding from Southern Boulevard from Green Village Road toward Fairmount Avenue Sunday when a car approached traveling in the same direction.

Because the cyclists were riding across instead of in single file, the driver, identified as Donald Murphy of Green Village, crossed into the northbound lane of traffic in order to pass the cyclists, police said.

A second car approached from the north traveling southbound along Southern Boulevard, forcing Murphy back into the southbound lane, according to police.

When Murphy came back into the southbound lane, his passenger-side mirror clipped one of the cyclists, Jeffrey Goldsmith, on the left shoulder, police said.
