Chatham Borough Seeks New Police Officers

The is currently accepting applications for police officers wishing to join their ranks.

Chief Philip J. Crosson said before the end of 2011, "We are anticipating the loss of two senior officers to retirement," with possibly a third officer to retire as well. Crosson also said that another one to two officers could leave the department within the next four years as well.

"So ultimately within in that 36 to 48 month period, we could be down four officers from where we are today," he said.

That loss is in addition to the 28 percent reduction in personnel that the Police Department has already seen in recent years.

According to an advertisement from the Chatham Borough Police Department, applicants need to have at least 60 college credits or at least 30 semester hours from an accredited college, plus two years of either satisfactory employment or military experience.

Applicants must also be between the ages of 18 and 35 years and have certifictaion from the Police Training Commission.

Interested applicants can download applications from the Chatham Borough website or pick up an application in person from the Records Bureau at the police department. Applicants must return their applications in person during office hours.

The deadline for applications is 1 p.m. on Friday, July 22.

The Chatham Borough Police Department also , which would pay for the salary and health care for one entry-level officer for three years, with the borough agreeing to pay for the officer to stay for a fourth year.
