Borough Police to Step Up Traffic Enforcement During Summer

Those who are stopped for violations will likely receive summonses.

The Chatham Borough Police Department will undertake a summertime safe streets campaign throughout the remainder of the summer in an effort to better ensure pedestrian and vehicular traffic safety.

In coordination with the Traffic Safety Unit and Traffic Safety Committee, several traffic counts have been conducted to identify areas that could benefit from additional enforcement action. In addition, summertime road construction projects have detoured traffic off of North Passaic Avenue on to some smaller less travelled borough roadways, which often causes residents some concern about the traffic hazards.

Accordingly, the police department has deployed some of its traffic monitoring and calming devices in an effort to alert and caution motorists about their driving habits. At this point, it will move its campaign to the next phase, which is enforcement. Teams of officers will be scheduled at various locations throughout the borough to address traffic issues that have been identified in an attempt to improve overall traffic safety in the community.

Prior to this campaign, the police department has posted its variable message board and speed cubes at different locations throughout the borough reminding motorists of their speed and warning them to slow down. Therefore, those stopped during this campaign for a motor vehicle violation should expect to receive a summons.
