Bear Sightings Reported in Chatham

Don't approach bear if you encounter one, police advise.

Several black bear sightings were reported in Chatham Thursday morning, authorities said.

The sightings occurred in the area of Huron Drive, according to a police alert.

"If you should encounter a black bear do not approach or attempt to feed the bear," the alert advised. "Report any aggressive bears to the Police Department. For more information on dealing with Black bears please visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/pdf/bearcountry.pdf"

This summer, bears in Chatham have been tracked by policefrightened away by sirens, and caught checking out open garages.
