Accident Causes Wires to Fall Across River Road

Wheelchair also reported taken from a home.

Jersey Central Power & Light was on the scene of a car accident early Wednesday morning on River Road repairing downed power lines at the scene, according to borough police.

Police said they responded to the car accident at about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday on River near Stanley Road. They said a 1987 GMC driven by Julia Harris-Montanez, of Newark, hit some low-hanging power lines along the roadway, snapping some of the wires and causing damage to the car.

No summonses were issued, there were no injuries and the vehicle was driven from the scene, but JCP&L workers were on the scene until 3 a.m. Wednesday repairing the wires.

Police also reported a wheelchair was taken from in front of an apartment on Lafayette Avenue. It was reported to police the wheelchair was hidden in some bushes in front of the home June 11 but was taken that afternoon.

Police said they checked the area but were unable to find the wheelchair. They said they then contacted the American Red Cross and made arrangements to have a wheelchair delivered to the victim at no cost.
