11-Year-Old Bicyclist Collides with Car

Girl hospitalized after incident at the intersection of School Avenue and Floral Street.

Chatham Township Police said Wednesday an 11-year-old girl on a Tuesday afternoon.

Township Police and the Chatham Emergency Squad responded to the intersection of School Avenue and Floral Street on reports of a cyclist and a motor vehicle colliding at approximately 3:20 p.m., police said.

The driver of the car, Elizabeth McKeown, 18, of Chatham Township, told police she was traveling north on Floral Street when a bicyclist struck the side of her Nissan Sentra, police said.

A witness told police the bicyclist, identified as an 11-year-old female, had disregarded a stop sign on School Avenue and rode into the side of the car, police said.

The child was wearing her helmet at the time of the incident, police said. She was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries by the Chatham Emergency Squad, according to police.

Township Police remind all residents that all persons under the age of 17 are required to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet which meets the standards of the American National Standards Institute. All bicyclists, regardless of age, are required to obey traffic laws.
