From downed power lines to flooded basements, many residents of the Chathams felt the sting from Hurricane Irene. The on the bridge leading to Chatham Middle School was one of the storm's most dangerous and costly impacts in town. The sinkhole cause the bridge to close, leaving all traffic to enter and exit exclusively from Main Street. It also exposed a large pipe which feeds water to borough residents. Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan called the sinkhole an "imminent danger" and said fixing quickly it was "a matter of public safety." The sinkhole is .
