Chatham Youth Wrestlers End Dual Meet Season With 45-37 Victory Over Montville To Make It Six Straight Victories

Chatham Wrestlers Beat Montville

On December 8 and 9, 2012 Chatham Youth Wrestlers competed in the Montville Team Dual Tournament which took place at Montville Township High School. This was a very competitive pre-season tournament. It was also the first competition the varsity team would face in the 2012-2013 season.

Our motto is very simple, if you want to be the best, you have to wrestle the best. We certainly did. While there were some great individual performances and two team victories, Chatham was hammered by three other teams. Montville was one of the teams to hammer Chatham with a one sided, 65 to 5, victory.

That's the kind of loss that can make an athlete rethink his/her participation in a sport or motivate them to work harder. Participation in this event achieved it's intended goal. Attendance at practice increased and remained a constant, intensity increased, the boys worked harder and became more focused and determined. What a difference three months of hard work can make.

On February 20, 2013, the Montville Broncos entered the gym at Mountainview brimming with confidence from their previous lopsided victory. It was not their night. At first, it appeared that Montville would break Chatham's 5-win streak as they mowed through the lighter and less experienced portion of the Cougar lineup. But that would change.

With the score 21-0, Connor Cortese (70) would be the first Cougar to get Chatham on the scoreboard with a 6-1 victory over his opponent. Montville's lead was further eroded with an 11-3 victory from Michael Rohe (75) and a 4-3 victory from Philip Hoerrner (80).  Chatham would take a 22-21 lead following pins from PJ Joel (85) and Jack Kimber (90). Chatham's lead would not last long. Following two straight losses at 96 and 102 and an unexpected forfeit at 109, Luke Ciccarelli (116) got  the team back on track with a 15-0 victory. With Montville up 37-27, Chatham got two straight pins from Matthew Tether (123) and Niccolo Colucci (130) and a forfeit at 137 (Timothy Rohe). At the end of the match it was Chatham 45, Montville 37.

This was the teams sixth straight victory and an unbelievable way to end the 2012-2013 dual meet season. With this victory, Chatham finished the season 9-3-1 which put the team in fourth place (out of twelve teams) in the North Jersey Youth Wrestling League.
