Chatham Wrestlers: Kings Of The Mat

Chatham wrestlers are Kings of the Mat.

The Chatham Youth Wrestling Club competes in three leagues including the King Of The Mat League.

The King Of The Mat league is divided into novice (first and second year wrestlers) and JV ( more experienced wrestlers). On Saturday February 2, 2013 9 members of our club competed in the season ending JV tournament in Hanover Township. Darius Khani (55), Michael Rohe (70), Cyrus Khani (86) and Drew Mitzak (96) won this tournament to earn the title, King Of The Mat. Darius Khani pinned his first opponent in the first period and then pinned his second opponent with 12 seconds left in the match. Michael Rohe never broke a sweat pinning both of his opponents in the first period.

Cyrus Khani was losing his first match 4-2 before pinning his opponent in the third period. Cyrus then pinned his second opponent, a tough wrestler from Madison who just qualified for the states, in the first period. Drew Mitzak got the most for his money winning both of his matches 2-0 on takedowns in overtime. John Rohe (60 ) pinned his first opponent but lost a close match in the finals of his weight class to finish the day in second. Dean Ciccarelli (87) lost his first match but bounced back to pin his second opponent to take third place. Gavin Glascow (102) also finished the day in third place. Gavin beat his first opponent 17-4.

Following two tough defeats, Gavin wrestled a tough opponent from Parsippany in the consolation round of his weight class. This was the last match of the day and probably the most exciting. Gavin just finished his third match when his bout was called. After a five minute break, Gavin competed for third place. Gavin was winning the match 4-3 in the third period when his opponent, with seconds left  on the clock, escaped to tie the score. The first period of over time could have gone either way but Gavin, with 5 seconds left on the clock, scored a two point take down to win the match and third place.

Teddy Joel (50) also finished the day in third. Jack Barrett (80) lost his first match but bounced back to beat his next opponent 7-5 with a two point take down in over time. Unfortunately, Jack injured his left elbow during his third match (tied 2-2) and could not continue. Our club is very proud of our wrestlers' accomplishments who proudly represented Chatham in this event. We wish Jack Barret a quick recovery.
