Thanksgiving Meals for Homebound to Have Hanukkah Twist

Latkes added to 500 turkey dinners for homebound individuals throughout Morris County.

As Hanukkah and Thanksgiving coincide this year for the first time since 1888, Chabad of SE Morris County will be adding a Hanukkah twist to its annual Thanksgiving Dinners for the Homebound initiative.

Latkes, traditional Hanukkah potato pancakes, will be an added side dish to 500 traditional turkey dinners that will be delivered free of charge to homebound individuals throughout Morris County, according to a Chabad news release.

Volunteers also planned to build Chabad’s first “Canorah,” a menorah made entirely out of donated cans of food.

Rabbi Shalom Lubin, executive director of Madison-based Chabad of SE Morris County, said Hanukkah is "when we express our gratitude and give thanks to God; how wonderful that this year it coincides with Thanksgiving, a day that our entire country is expressing thanks and gratitude as well!"

"There are many residents of our community who are all alone and unable to get out, and this year we hope to share our gratitude by enabling everyone to celebrate this holiday," he said.

Chabad also has scheduled four public menorah lightings:

East Hanover:
6 p.m. Wednesday, the first night of Hanukkah. The Menorah is located in front of Town Hall at 411 Ridgedale Ave. in East Hanover.

Madison:
5 p.m. Sunday, the fifth night of Hanukkah. The Menorah is located across the street from the Hartley Dodge Memorial building on Kings Road at the Madison Train Station.

The Chathams:
7 p.m. Sunday, the fifth night of Hanukkah, at the Gazebo in Firehouse Plaza on Fairmount Avenue in Chatham Borough

Florham Park:
6 p.m. Tuesday, the seventh night of Hanukkah. The Menorah is located in front of the Gazebo at 111 Ridgedale Ave. in Florham Park.

The Thanksgiving Dinners for the Homebound Initiative and Menorah Lightings are a project of Chabad of SE Morris County, a Jewish outreach, educational and social service organization located at 42 Park Ave. in Madison.

The Thanksgiving Dinners for the Homebound project has been partially sponsored by grants from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey and Madison Rotary Club.
