Only Together Can We Enrich The Lives of Newark Youth

Dear Friend and Supporter,

Thank you for your time, your support and your donations.

The children and families served by the programs of PCCI want to extend their thanks to you and to all of our loyal supporters who continue to make what we do possible.

PCCI’s programs have provided educational, cultural, artistic and recreational activities for over 350 Newark youth and families each year, for over 48 years.

This summer, we organized day and overnight camp experiences for 75 Newark kids. In October, SCEEP successfully began another academic year at 15 urban and suburban churches, schools, and corporations.

PCCI is dedicated to the long-term goal of changing lives one child at a time through our one-to-one tutoring/mentoring programs and our summer camperships.  Our goal is simple: provide the best service to Newark children and families to help develop and sustain a culture of academic success and enrichment.

PCCI leverages your support to build strong programs through our stellar volunteer program and partnerships with other local educational and community institutions.

In 2011, we succeeded in establishing several new programmatic initiatives to support the important work of PCCI and complement our core programs. SCEEP will always remain strong and our efforts will now include other Newark community initiatives such as:

Newark READS! Festival: A free cultural, artistic and literary event designed for the children and their families in Newark, NJ.  Attendees had the opportunity to attend storytelling events, engage in art-integrated into literacy  activities designed for each grade level (K-12), participate in special events, performances, meet authors, apply for library cards, and participate in book giveaways and book signings.

The Healthy Kids Food Festival: A celebration of food, healthy eating, cooking skills, lifestyle choices and nutrition benefitting the youth and families of Newark.  In partnership with community-based organizations, educational and corporate institutions such as Rutgers University, Independence Bank, Lotus Yoga, Newark Public Schools, the festival will be  facilitated by PCCI in conjunction with Newark Deputy Mayor, Margarita Muniz’ Office and First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.

Newark Arts Integrated into Literacy Project (NAIL):  PCCI’s collaborative project with Newark Public Schools, Office of Academic Services Office of the Visual and Performing Arts is to disseminate a module of extended services to children for the purpose of literacy and visual arts development. The goals and objectives are to assist in the implementation to integrate visual arts into the 2nd and 3rd grade.

SCEEP Coordinator/Tutor Professional Development:  Professional development workshops designed and facilitated by Newark Public School teachers centered on differentiated instruction in Math and Language Arts Literacy.

Rutgers University College of Nursing: PCCI has been providing educational and support services for the youth of Newark for the past 48 years. We will now collaborate with Rutgers University College of Nursing (RUCON) to evaluate the tutoring and nutritional components of our SCEEP program. RUCON will also assist with developing a plan to improve student retention in the program, especially during the sixth grade year.

We appreciate our friends and supporters who have been faithful contributors to PCCI. Without your support we would not be able to serve the hundreds of children who attend our programs every week during the school year and over the summer.

With your help, PCCI can continue to offer exciting new programs that will strengthen and enrich our core.

We are working hard to expand support from foundations, corporations, faith communities and individuals.  Our success depends on all of us working together.

PCCI has a rich history of serving under-served communities in Newark and we are gearing up to take it to the next level.  We can only make it happen with you as our partner.
