850,000 people. That is the number of people in New Jersey that currently live below the US poverty level. And of that, 45% of them are children, almost 400,000 in total. Coldwell Banker and their CBRB Cares (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Cares) effort have decided to take action to help feed the hungry in New Jersey – especially now, in the summer, when food pantry stock is very low and kids are not at school to get their free or reduced-priced lunch that many of them counted on each day.
With the help of YouGiveGoods, an innovative company based in Mendham, Coldwell Banker has set up an Online Food Drive Contest which is running from now through Labor Day. The Chatham and Madison offices are challenging the Bernardsville and Basking Ridge offices to a “friendly competition”. According to Scott Bruen, the Branch Vice President of the Coldwell Banker Bernardsville office, “We thought setting up the competition would add some fun to the food drive and hopefully get more people involved. Plus, running the Contest online makes it so easy for everyone to help”. And Linda McElgunn, Manager of the Chatham office agreed, “Yes, we really wanted to do something to help the food pantries this summer and having the ability to make the donations online makes it easy, especially for people that are away for the summer but still want to help”.
For this contest, the Madison and Chatham offices will be supporting the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown. According to Marla Drury, the Director of Development/Community Outreach there, “We are especially thankful that a food drive is being set up now for the Soup Kitchen. Unfortunately, summer is a time of year when not many food drives are run on our behalf.” She continued, “We work with YouGiveGoods on an ongoing basis, their delivery service is great and all of the food available for people to donate online are the things we really need.” As part of the CBRB Cares initiative, the Bernardsville and Basking Ridge offices will be supporting the Community Food Bank of New Jersey based in Hillside. The other CBRB Cares New Jersey partners are the Habitat for Humanity, Make-A Wish Foundation and Special Olympics organizations.
