“We like to combine our fall book and bake sale and Open House with the traditional
German celebration of St. Martin. It is GLSMC’s declared mission to celebrate
German culture and share the German heritage with our community,“ notes Martina
Molner, School President. “Children love to handcraft their lanterns and parade
with them. We invite everyone to participate in the celebration and enjoy the
baked treats.“

What
is the Festival of Lanterns?

The annual festival celebrates the work of St.
Martin, a Roman soldier who became a monk and is the patron saint of beggars.
The tradition includes handmaking paper lanterns, learning the story of
St. Martin through songs, and parading through town to beg for gifts that
usually include cakes and sweets. Communities throughout Germany, Austria, The
Netherlands and Poland, among others, host the festival annually to remind
children about the importance of giving to the less fortunate.

The German School of Morris County’s semi-annual book
and bake sale features a variety of gently used German-language books from picture
board books to chapter books, as well as delectable German cakes, tortes and
pastries.  The event is open to the
public.
