The Sierra Club
presents Dr. Daniela Shebitz,
an ecology professor at Kean University. She will describe her ongoing research
in Costa Rica where she works with colleagues and students to study the effects
of land management on the distribution of medicinal plants. She works with
local people to document the medicinal plants in the tropical wet lowland
forests, learning how to harvest, prepare, and use the plants as medicine for
ailments ranging from insect bites to cancer. She then studies how land
management such as clearing land for pasture is affecting the ecology and
distribution of these important plant species.
