Chatham Voters Turn Out to Support GOP Candidates

New, returning candidates ran unopposed for seats on local governing bodies.

Voters in the Chathams on Tuesday supported GOP candidates across the board, including in the uncontested local elections, results showed.

Residents favored a statewide special question allowing veterans groups to raise money through games of chance, but were split on whether to raise the minimum wage to $8.25 and adjust it each year for inflation.

By a two-vote margin, township voters opposed the measure, which ultimately was approved with overwhelming statewide support, according to preliminary results.

In Chatham Township, there were 1,256 "yes" votes and 1,258 "no" votes on the minimum wage question.

Chatham Borough voters favored the wage change by a 62-vote margin, with 970 "yes" votes to 908 "no" votes.

Township Committee

Two Republican candidates ran unopposed in the General Election for a pair of Chatham Township Committee seats. Committee member Robert Gallop and newcomer Curt Ritter won election with 2,229 and 2,227 votes, respectively, according to unofficial results.

Borough Council
Three Republican candidates ran unopposed for three open Chatham Borough Council seats. Chatham Borough council members James Collander and Victoria Fife won re-election, with 1,600 and 1,596 votes, respectively. They were on a ticket with first-time candidate Alida Kass, who ran unopposed for the remainder of Len Resto's unexpired term. Kass received 1,558 votes, according to the unofficial tally.

On a special question about whether the state should allow veterans groups to raise money through games of chance, borough voters went 1,443 "yes" to 418 "no."

Township voters went 1,939 "yes" to 543 "no."
