Christie: 'Democrats are Coming to Our Side' on Election Day

On eve of Election Day, Mendham resident 'wanted to make sure that we came home to Morris County' for 'rally among our friends.'

After former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani accompanied Gov. Chris Christie’s campaign trail on Friday, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez joined Christie on Monday night in his home county of Morris.

Christie drew applause, laughter and a brief chant of "four more years" from the crowd of about 400 people on the eve of election day at the Morris Plains VFW Post 3401

“If you liked the first four years when I had to deal with a Democratic legislature, you give me a Republican legislature, you’re going to love the next four years,” Christie said. “It’s within our grasp ... Susana has the same issue we have. She’s a conservative Republican governor in a blue state who has to decide, do you want to win the argument or do you want to govern? … What you hired us to do was to govern, to bring people together … and to make principal compromise.”

“He sits down and makes sure he develops these relationships with Democrats, Republicans, Independents, with Hispanics, with Latinos, with Anglos, with African Americans because when you can agree, you do the best there is possible for the people you represent,” Martinez said.

Martinez came to support Christie the day before and the day of elections. After his speech, Christie headed to Union City, his last stop of the night.

“We’re thrilled that the governor chose this as his final campaign stop of Morris County,” Morris Plains Mayor Frank Druetzler said. “We love him and people have been excited all weekend that he was going to come. You can see the enthusiasm.”

“The governor’s done a great job in the state. I personally would like to see him run for president,” said Bob Oehley, past VFW commander. “To have him here at VFW Post 3401 Morris Plains is an honor.”

Christie added that this is an uphill battle because there are “750,000 more Democrats than Republicans registered in New Jersey, so we’re always climbing uphill, but tomorrow night I bet you that a whole lot of those Democrats are coming to our side,” he said.

Two Morris Plains residents weighed in on Christie’s speech.

“I thought he was great. He was to the point and holds nothing back. He tells it like it is,” Pam Antonaccio said.

He had a “great presence. He is a man with a lot of dedication and class. He never said one bad word about his opponent. He’s a good man,” Betty Gaynor said.
