Wig Out (In a Good Way)

And other essential information for Friday, May 27, 2011.

Whether you are driving down to the shore or staying in town for the Chatham United tournament this weekend, the National Weather Service predicts warm weather. And since Chatham kids don't have to go to school today, parents can start the weekend early! To find out why the kids can sleep in, check out the Five Things You Need to Know Today:

  1. You need to know about school: Chatham public schools are closed Friday because of an unused snow day.
  2. You need to know about recycling: Chatham Township residents can leave their sorted recycling on the curb for pick-up Friday morning beginning at 6 a.m.
  3. You need to know about story time: Children ages 6 and under can stop by the Library of the Chathams for Drop-In for Stories at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  4. You need to know about track: The boys and girls track teams compete at the state sectional championship Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
  5. You need to know about wigs: In 2006 two sisters in Bellingham, Wash. convinced their friends to go about their business wearing wigs, and since then National Wig Out Day has become like Halloween in warmer weather. Some kids at Lafayette Avenue School don’t need wigs, though, since they’ll soon be donating their hair to make wigs for kids suffering hair loss due to illness.

For other information worth knowing, see the Chatham Patch events calendar and announcements section—and if you've got something the community should know, don't forget to make a post of your own in one or both of those site sections.
