Water Main Break Affects Summit Avenue Residents

Service restored to homes.

Department of Public Works crew members this weekend worked to fix a water main in front of 33 Summit Ave. in Chatham Borough, which broke at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The three-man crew, led by George Traver, had to replace a broken service saddle, causing approximately 50 homes on Summit Avenue to go without water for about two hours.

Water has been restored to all the residents, and the crew estimated that work would continue until around 2:30 p.m. Travers stated that water quality was not affected, noting that the quality of the water is tested every week.

This is the second water main break reported this weekend. A break on Main Street Friday night led to complaints from residents of water discoloration. Chatham Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan stated that water quality was not affected. He further noted that the pipes in Chatham are over 100 years old, and that breaks are common.
