Outdoor Mass and barbecue kicks off series of events in honor of Rev. Ed Hinds.

The members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chatham Borough gathered at Lum Avenue Field for an outdoor Mass and picnic Sunday afternoon.

The picnic was the first community event of several planned over the coming weeks, including an Oktoberfest and a 5k run, all to honor the slain Rev. Ed Hinds.

Parishioners brought lawn chairs for the outdoor Mass. The Knights of Columbus barbecued hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs. The Youth Group provided face painting, sand art and temporary tattoos to children, and nearby parents promoted volunteer opportunities to children and adults at various organizations.
