No Threat Posed in Gas Main Break

Officials say no homes are leaking gas and there is no need to evacuate.

The , Chatham Township Fire Department, Green Village Fire Department and PSE&G responded to a gas main break on Sandy Hill Road in the township Tuesday evening.

The main break was reported at about 6:45 p.m., and those who responded said they could smell the gas. Kevin Doherty, chief of the Green Village Fire Department, said PSE&G had checked nearby homes and found no gas leaks in residences, and there was no need to evacuate the area. 

"The [repair] crew should be here soon," Doherty said.

Police set up detour signs along Ferndale Road to keep cars off of Sandy Hill Road. Repair should go on through the night.

"These things happen once in a while," Doherty said.
