International Volunteerism Looks Good

Everything you need to know to get you through your Tuesday.

At Patch, we love volunteers. We also love birthdays. How fortunate that these two things combine together today, when the Peace Corps, one of America's largest and most far-reaching volunteer organization, turns 50. To learn more about the Peace Corps, and other essential information, check out the Five Things You Need to Know Today:

  1. You need to know about girls who like to run: Girls in grades 3 through 8 can register for , a 10-week spring running program that will meet at twice a week. Registration opens today at 9 a.m. through the Girls on the Run website.
  2. You need to know about the New Jersey Foodbank: Students from will be taking a trip to the Jersey Foodbank today, to sort food and help out. Another stellar example of volunteerism!
  3. You need to know about recycling: Residents of Chatham Township can take their recycling over to the Tanglewood facility today between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
  4. You need to know about basketball tournaments: The boys varsity basketball team faces Plainwood in an away game, and the girls take on Parsippany Hills at home, both in the NJSIAA tournaments.
  5. You need to know about the Peace Corps: The Peace Corps was established on March 1, 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, and has since sent over 200,000 volunteers to 139 countries to help improve people's lives. Currently over 8,500 people volunteer with the Peace Corps, and from where we sit, that makes 50 look pretty good.

For other information worth knowing, see the Chatham Patch events calendar and announcements section — and if you've got something the community should know, don't forget to make a post of your own in one or both of those site sections.
