Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Everything necessary to know this March 17.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Suggestions on where to go to celebrate on this day when everybody's Irish are coming later today, but for now, let us take you through the Five Things You Need to Know Today.

For other information worth knowing, see the Chatham Patch events calendar and announcements section — and if you've got something the community should know, don't forget to make a post of your own in one or both of those site sections.

  1. You need to know how to benefit the volunteer firemen of Chatham: You can do it by attending a benefit at Juniper Village in Chatham Township tonight at 7 p.m., where magician John Carlson will perform.
  2. You need to know about adjustments: The Board of Adjustments of Chatham Township meets at the Chatham Township Municipal Building tonight at 7:30 p.m.
  3. You need to know where to hear some nice jazz music: The New Jersey City University Jazz Ensemble performs tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Chatham High School. The concert is free of charge.
  4. You need to know about free books at the library: The Friends of the Library are now offering free books from the book sale! Just go to the basement during business hours.
  5. You need to know what holiday it is today: Wait a minute, today’s a holiday? Kidding! Ireland’s patron and most famous saint was actually British, and was captured from his home and traded into slavery in Ireland. After six years he returned to Britain, joined the church and returned to Ireland as a bishop. He died on March 17 in the year 493 AD, and his feast day is celebrated to this day.

Chatham Patch would like to wish all of our readers a Happy St. Patrick's Day and remind you to celebrate responsibly.
