Five Things You Can't Do in the Chathams

Signs and smoking both make the list.

Every day, Chatham Patch brings you a list of Five Things You Need to Know today. As we move into summer, Chatham Patch now brings you a reminder of five things you can't do in town (no matter how much you may want to):

  1. You can't smoke in public parks: Or on athletic fields, for that matter. Both the governing bodies of Chatham Borough and Chatham Township passed ordinances last year that forbade the use of tobacco products in recreational areas.
  2. You can't put up any darn sign you want: At least, not in Chatham Borough. The sign ordinance, which is currently undergoing revisions, does not permit signs on public property, such as sidewalks or the green space outside of the or the , without approval from Vince DeNave, the zoning officer.
  3. You can't drink in public: Not on public property, at least.
  4. You can't set off fireworks: The Chatham Borough Council passed a resolution permitting the Chatham Borough Fire Department to set off fireworks for the Fourth of July, but if you are tempted by small pyrotechnics that you can set off in your backyard, just add a hefty municipal fine and resist the temptation.
  5. You can't take down a tree in the township: Not without proving that it is diseased or poses a threat of falling. Chatham Township has a tree ordinance which mandates that there must be at least 16 trees per acre of land, and several volunteers have recently joined the Tree Safety Committee as well.
