Chatham Under Thunderstorm, Heat Warning

The National Weather Service urges care in thunderstorms.

Chatham, Morris County and many other New Jersey counties are under several weather warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS), some lasting through Thursday afternoon.

The most immediate warning is for a severe thunderstorm, "capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 [miles per hour]," as well as hail and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, according to the NWS website.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to the area, with potentially flooding.

The NWS recommends residents remain indoors for the duration of the storm. They warn of a possibility of flash flood warning until 7 p.m. Wednesday, with up to 2 in. of rain falling in one hour.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect. The projected high is 100 degrees, with high humidity also expected. "A prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur," according to the NWS website, and "the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely."

A hazardous weather warning is in effect through Tuesday, though "the probability of widespread hazardous weather is low" during those days, according to the NWS website.
