Borough Trick-or-Treating in Doubt for Monday

Downed wires and debris a concern, mayor says as borough outages drop to about 1,000.

About 1,000 Chatham Borough residents remained without power Sunday afternoon, but municipal officials have not yet made a decision if Halloween trick-or-treating will be allowed on Monday.

According to a statement to borough residents, Mayor Bruce Harris said power has been restored to much of the East end of the borough and the Lafayette section.

The area known as the "Manor" section, north of Main Street and west of North Passaic Avenue, remained without power early Sunday, Harris said.

Portions of Garden Avenue, Ellers Drive and the adjacent streets, portions of the area bounded by Watchung Avenue, Edgehill Avenue, Lafayette Avenue and Longwood Avenue, River Road and the adjacent streets, Red Road, Fuller Avenue, Dempster Road, Pihlman Place, Bridge Street, Overlook Road and portions of Hillside Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Orchard Road, Chatham Street, Maple Street and Edgehill Avenue also remained out Sunday morning, Harris said.

"Because the situation is fluid, and JCP&L does not provide precise information, this is based on our own field surveys taken earlier today," Harris said.

Harris said the areas utility crews were expected to focus on Sunday were Washington Avenue School and Milton Avenue School and adjacent areas for school possibly opening on Monday and for Tuesday's elections.

The borough’s emergency management team will determine Sunday if the amount of debris and and downed wires will be a safety concern for Monday's scheduled Halloween trick-or-treating.
