St. Patrick School Takes Four Top Prizes in Annual Forensics Tournament

On December 5, 2013 St. Patrick School in Chatham hosted area Catholic schools for the annual fall forensic tournament. Varsity (grades 7&8) and Junior Varsity (grades 5&6) teams competed for individual and team trophies. The competition was in interpretive reading, where students choose a favorite book or poem and read a 3-7 minute passage. Volunteers from the Oratory Prep and Delbarton Debate teams judged the competitions. Judges were looking for effectiveness in communicating emotion and meaning through the use of vocal tone, characterization and facial expression.

St. Patrick students were extremely successful, walking away with four of the six top prizes, including second and third place varsity and first and third place junior varsity.

Schools attending the tournament in addition to St. Patrick School in Chatham were St. Joseph School in Mendham, St. Vincent Martyr in Madison, St. Virgil Academy in Morris Plains, St. Rose of Lima Academy in East Hanover, Assumption School in Morristown, St. Mary Academy in Denville, and Holy Family in Florham Park. The schools meet twice each year to compete in interpretive reading in the fall and to compete in original declamation in the spring.
