Supper Closes, But May Again Return to the Table

Owner says she's looking for a new location.

Walking or driving down Main Street the last few weeks, Chathamites may have noticed a change in the downtown landscape.

Supper, the Main Street eatery owned by Karen Hayes, closed its doors officially on Nov. 5. Hayes said she stayed open "just a little bit longer after that" as she packed up the restaurant. The closing, she said, "broke my heart."

Hayes is now in the process of finishing some catering jobs she'd taken on before the restaurant closed. Some of her staff is helping her out, she said.

Hayes said those who should not confuse the closing of the location with the end of the business. "I am trying now to find a new spot," Hayes said.

The new location might have a different look and feel from the old Supper. The edifice at 221 Main St. was built in 1923 and installed in Chatham in 1949. Before Supper opened in 2009, the location house the Chatham Diner.

When Hayes and her husband Tim opened the restaurant, their alterations to the building included professional kitchen remodeling, restoration of windows, installation of Tiffany sconces and ceiling pendants, painting inside and out, and additions of a wooden bar and a fireplace. For their restoration and remodeling efforts, the Chatham Borough Historic Preservation Commission , 

Hayes said a new location will likely do take-out, catering and deli services, but probably not have a sit-down restaurant.

"Maybe I would do like 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.," she said. "I think I'd like to do the lunch, the deli, the catering ... And then I love my dinners."

Until then, Hayes said she is still organizing everything from the restaurant and looks forward to the days she can provide food for the town again.
