Canadian Duo DALA to Play in Chatham Saturday

The Canadian duo performs at Sanctuary this weekend.

The Sanctuary Concert Series hosts the Canadian singing duo Dala at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine met in a high school music class in 2002 and formed a band name taken from the last two letters of their first names. In the last 11 years they have had what Sanctuary Concerts Head Scott Sheldon described as "a meteoric rise," from music festival appearances to a feature on PBS called "Girls from the North Country."

DALA's fifth album, "Everyone is Someone," was called the Album of the Year in 2010 by The Irish Post. The album joined the group's repertoire, which includes five Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Folk Group.

Their song “Horses” was named one of the Top Ten Folk Songs of 2009 by National Public Radio's Folk Alley, and another reviewer calls their music "reminiscent of the Everly Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, and Emmylou Harris."

Opening for DALA are The Sultans of Swing, a Canadian gypsy jazz band whose music ranges from flamenco to Arabic influences and rhythms. Their latest album includes a gypsy jazz version of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," featuring DALA on vocals.

Sanctuary Concerts teamed up with Chatham Patch and offered two free tickets to the first reader who can correctly answer the following trivia question:

Q: The performers this Saturday at The Sanctuary Concerts are the award-winning Canadian female duo DALA, who combine gorgeous harmonies, moving songwriting, and breezy and warm-hearted performances. Opening for DALA are The Sultans of Swing, a virtuoso gypsy jazz/world music group. DALA were guest vocalists on the Sultans’ gypsy-jazz cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold.” What Neil Young cover are DALA known for?

The tickets have already been awarded, but the Sanctuary Concerts still have tickets available to see Dala and The Sultans of Swing at 8 p.m. Saturday.
